Amulree and The Sma’ Glen

From Crieff, the Perthshire Tourist Route runs north past the popular Foulford Inn, famous for its folk music sessions, to the wild and spectacular Sma’ Glen, which is reputed to be the burial place of Ossian, the legendary Celtic bard. Look out for Ossian’s Stone at the northern end of the Glen.

Just beyond the glen, the small village of Amulree spreads out around the picturesque 18th century Amulree Church and was once one of the major cattle trysts in Scotland where up to 30,000 breasts could be brought for sale. Here you can see the remains of Wade’s Road built in the 18th century as one of the main routes into the Highlands, or stop off in the village hotel that started life in 1714 as an inn for cattle drovers.

From Amilree, you can continue northwards on the tourist route to Aberfeldy through the high forests of Glen Cochill. Alternatively, take a narrow road past Loch Freuchie over the hills and moors of Glen Quaich to Kenmore to enjoy magnificent scenery and a good few hairpin bends.
