Grandtully and Strathtay
The upper reaches of the River Tay head east from Aberfeldy to Ballinluig where the river turns to the south. The river is at its most beautiful here and along its banks lie a series of attractive villages and places of interest.
Cluny House Gardens, just to the east of Aberfeldy are magnificent woodland gardens famed for their Himalayan collections. Strathtay village was built on the north bank of the river in the late 19th century when a railway line was constructed to Aberfeldy. Its substantial mansions look over to Grandtully on the opposite bank, across a starch of water that’s very popular with canoeists. Look out for the gates of their white water slalom course.
This part of the river is also much favoured by anglers. Findynate estate Salmon Fishing offers beats with boats and ghillies at very reasonable prices and beginners can enjoy top class professional fly fishing tuition from Ally’s Casting Clinic based nearby.
A few miles east, Logierait was once the site of a 18th century prison and court house and even earlier, a hunting castle of the Stewart kings of Scotland. The local churchyard is one of many in this area to contain interesting old gravestones with Pictish symbols.
