Kinross
Lying only 25 miles to the north of Edinburgh, Kinross-shire traditionally stretched out around historic Loch Leven to form the second smallest county in Scotland until it was merged with Perthshire in the 1970s.
Kinross still retains the feel and charm (and the amenities) of a traditional county town serving scattered villages and farms spread across rolling hills that offer great opportunities for walking and cycling.
Located close to the new European ferry terminal at Rosyth and only 16 miles from Perth, Kinross and Loch Leven is an ideal location.
Kinross has retained the feel of a small, rural, county town despite easy proximity to Scotland’s major cities. Among its well preserved historic buildings is Kinross House, a stately 17th century mansion located beside Loch Leven. While the house is not open to the public, visitors are welcome to stroll through the magnificent gardens past Rachel House, which houses Scotland’s only children’s hospice, and to visit the adjacent Hospice Information Centre & Gift Shop.
Nearby, the grassy banks of Kirkgate Park sit on the shores of the loch. Grass is also put to other use locally for golfers. As well as Kinross’ own two courses there are actually 100 courses within 1 hours drive of the town.
You can enjoy more unusual outdoor activities at the Scottish Raptor Centre, where there are regular displays of birds of prey as well as falconry courses and hunting days.
Alternatively, if you prefer your activities indoors, the pool, spa, and sauna at Loch Leven Leisure Centre may help you relax and unwind.
For shoppers, the Kin-Craft Centre and St Serfs Crafts carry full ranges of the best of Scottish crafts while the exhibition and shop at Cashmere at Lochleven are also famed for their colourful selection. As well as a regular Saturday Car Boot Sale, Kinross Market hold a weekly Sunday Market which is Scotland’s largest indoor Sunday market with over 150 traders.
Once a year, Kinross goes music mad when it hosts ‘T in the Park’, Scotland’s largest annual rock music festival.
Throughout the year you’ll be spoilt for places to eat and drink as Kinross boasts many well known restaurants that attract diners from Edinburgh and further a field.
